Precision medicine to achieve an optimal you.
We set up the doctor-led Cotswold Optimal Health Clinic in Gloucestershire in order to provide a new medical service that aims to understand you, your genetics, your biochemical make up and your health through tailored, personalised medicine. Our clinic looks to help you optimise your health with a proactive approach to achieve and maintain a healthy lifespan. With individualised treatment plans we aim to support you to achieve your goals, whatever your stage of adulthood.
Having both worked locally in the NHS for over a decade, as General Practitioners we found that patients were increasingly missing out on truly optimising their health and instead were being given symptom-driven care, missing the opportunity to identify and address the root cause of their issues. At Cotswold Optimal Health, we understand that we don't all fit into categories or boxes, even if we have been labelled with the same disease, and thus each of us needs a very personalised and individual approach to reaching optimal health.
This is the foundation of our practice.
We cover all aspects of medicine but are particularly interested in:
exercise and musculoskeletal health
gut health & the microbiome

Meet The Team
Dr Ranulf Crooke
MBBS BSc(Hons) MRCGP DFSRH PGDip SEM AFMCP-UK
Dr Crooke graduated from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical School in 2007 having completed an undergraduate degree in Physiology. He moved to Gloucestershire to complete his General Practice training.
He is completing a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath, researching the effects of high intensity-interval training in patients with prostate cancer. He has also worked in sports medicine and musculoskeletal clinics.
He is particularly passionate about helping people increase their physical activity. Realising this was only part of the puzzle he went on to complete and specialise in functional medicine and joining Dr Whiteside in setting up the Cotswold Optimal Health Clinic.
Dr Simon Whiteside
MBBS MRCGP B.Med Sci Dip.BSLM AFMCP-UK
Dr Whiteside graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2004, before moving to Gloucestershire to complete his General Practice training in 2009.
Within his NHS practice he has taken the lead in diabetes, respiratory medicine and cardiology and quickly came to realise the importance of lifestyle and environment, as well as psychology, on physical health. He was a member of the first cohort to complete the Diploma in the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine before then going on to train and specialise in functional medicine.
He very much enjoys being able to spend the time with patients to identify the root causes of their ill-health, while recognising the crucial role of such things as nutrition, movement, stress management and sleep optimisation in the process of healing. He is therefore very excited to have joined Dr Crooke in establishing Cotswold Optimal Health Clinic.
Our clinic is located in the centre of Cheltenham, in the Heart of the Cotswolds. The Cotswold Optimal Health Clinic is situated within a stones throw of the famous tree-lined Promenade with its Regency frontage and its high-end shops. Parking is available to the front of the clinic or the public car parks on St Georges Road and Chapel Walk.
